The Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) was begun by three pastors serving German immigrants in Wisconsin. It is evangelical, in other words “gospel orientated.” It adheres to the teachings of Martin Luther. It was Luther who made it clear that salvation is received through faith in Jesus as a gift from God. Synod literally translated means “walking together.” As a fellowship of Christians, members walk together as individuals and congregations sharing a common bond of faith in Jesus articulated in the Lutheran Confessions.
