<p>1 Blessed is the man<br />
   who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked<br />
or stand in the way of sinners<br />
   or sit in the seat of mockers.<br />
2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD,<br />
   and on his law he meditates day and night.<br />
3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water,<br />
   which yields its fruit in season<br />
and whose leaf does not wither.<br />
   Whatever he does prospers.<br />
 4 Not so the wicked!<br />
   They are like chaff<br />
   that the wind blows away.<br />
5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,<br />
   nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.</p>
<p> 6 For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous,<br />
   but the way of the wicked will perish.</p></blockquote>

Sermon text for today; Matthew 4:12-23</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>Jesus Begins to Preach</strong></p>
<p> 12 When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he withdrew to Galilee. 13 Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali— 14 to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah:<br />
 15 “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,<br />
   the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan,<br />
   Galilee of the Gentiles—<br />
16 the people living in darkness<br />
   have seen a great light;<br />
on those living in the land of the shadow of death<br />
   a light has dawned.”[a]</p>
<p> 17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”</p>
<p><strong>Jesus Calls His First Disciples</strong></p>
<p> 18 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 20 At once they left their nets and followed him.<br />
 21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.</p>
<p><strong>Jesus Heals the Sick</strong></p>
<p> 23 Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people.<br />

Jesus Begins to Preach

 12 When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he withdrew to Galilee. 13 Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali— 14 to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah:

<blockquote><p>Psalm 89[a]</p>
<p>    <strong>A maskil[b] of Ethan the Ezrahite.</strong><br />
 1 I will sing of the LORD’s great love forever;<br />
   with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known<br />
   through all generations.<br />
2 I will declare that your love stands firm forever,<br />
   that you have established your faithfulness in heaven itself.<br />
3 You said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one,<br />
   I have sworn to David my servant,<br />
4 ‘I will establish your line forever<br />
   and make your throne firm through all generations.’”[c]</p>
<p> 5 The heavens praise your wonders, LORD,<br />
   your faithfulness too, in the assembly of the holy ones.<br />
6 For who in the skies above can compare with the LORD?<br />
   Who is like the LORD among the heavenly beings?<br />
7 In the council of the holy ones God is greatly feared;<br />
   he is more awesome than all who surround him.<br />
8 Who is like you, LORD God Almighty?<br />
   You, LORD, are mighty, and your faithfulness surrounds you.</p>
<p> 9 You rule over the surging sea;<br />
   when its waves mount up, you still them.<br />
10 You crushed Rahab like one of the slain;<br />
   with your strong arm you scattered your enemies.<br />
11 The heavens are yours, and yours also the earth;<br />

16 They rejoice in your name all day long;<br />

17 For you are their glory and strength,<br />

“I have bestowed strength on a warrior;<br />

21 My hand will sustain him;<br />
   surely my arm will strengthen him.<br />
22 The enemy will not get the better of him;<br />
   the wicked will not oppress him.<br />
23 I will crush his foes before him<br />
   and strike down his adversaries.<br />
24 My faithful love will be with him,<br />
   and through my name his horn[f] will be exalted.<br />
25 I will set his hand over the sea,<br />
   his right hand over the rivers.<br />
26 He will call out to me, ‘You are my Father,<br />
   my God, the Rock my Savior.’<br />
27 And I will appoint him to be my firstborn,<br />
   the most exalted of the kings of the earth.<br />
28 I will maintain my love to him forever,<br />
   and my covenant with him will never fail.<br />
29 I will establish his line forever,<br />
   his throne as long as the heavens endure.</p>
<p> 30 “If his sons forsake my law<br />
   and do not follow my statutes,<br />
31 if they violate my decrees<br />
   and fail to keep my commands,<br />
32 I will punish their sin with the rod,<br />
   their iniquity with flogging;<br />
33 but I will not take my love from him,<br />
   nor will I ever betray my faithfulness.<br />
34 I will not violate my covenant<br />
   or alter what my lips have uttered.<br />
35 Once for all, I have sworn by my holiness—<br />
   and I will not lie to David—<br />
36 that his line will continue forever<br />
   and his throne endure before me like the sun;<br />
37 it will be established forever like the moon,<br />
   the faithful witness in the sky.”</p>
<p> 38 But you have rejected, you have spurned,<br />
   you have been very angry with your anointed one.<br />
39 You have renounced the covenant with your servant<br />
   and have defiled his crown in the dust.<br />
40 You have broken through all his walls<br />
   and reduced his strongholds to ruins.<br />
41 All who pass by have plundered him;<br />
   he has become the scorn of his neighbors.<br />
42 You have exalted the right hand of his foes;<br />
   you have made all his enemies rejoice.<br />
43 Indeed, you have turned back the edge of his sword<br />
   and have not supported him in battle.<br />
44 You have put an end to his splendor<br />

45 You have cut short the days of his youth;<br />

<p> 46 How long, LORD? Will you hide yourself forever?<br />
   How long will your wrath burn like fire?<br />

48 Who can live and not see death,<br />

 1 I will sing of the LORD’s great love forever; 
   with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known 
   through all generations. 
2 I will declare that your love stands firm forever, 
   that you have established your faithfulness in heaven itself. 
3 You said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one, 
   I have sworn to David my servant, 
4 ‘I will establish your line forever 
   and make your throne firm through all generations.’”[c]

 5 The heavens praise your wonders, LORD, 
   your faithfulness too, in the assembly of the holy ones. 
6 For who in the skies above can compare with the LORD? 
   Who is like the LORD among the heavenly beings? 
7 In the council of the holy ones God is greatly feared; 
   he is more awesome than all who surround him. 
8 Who is like you, LORD God Almighty? 
   You, LORD, are mighty, and your faithfulness surrounds you.

 9 You rule over the surging sea; 
   when its waves mount up, you still them. 
10 You crushed Rahab like one of the slain; 
   with your strong arm you scattered your enemies. 
11 The heavens are yours, and yours also the earth; 
   you founded the world and all that is in it. 
12 You created the north and the south; 
   Tabor and Hermon sing for joy at your name. 
13 Your arm is endowed with power; 
   your hand is strong, your right hand exalted.

 14 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; 
   love and faithfulness go before you. 
15 Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you, 
   who walk in the light of your presence, LORD. 
16 They rejoice in your name all day long; 
   they celebrate your righteousness. 
17 For you are their glory and strength, 
   and by your favor you exalt our horn.[d] 
18 Indeed, our shield[e] belongs to the LORD, 
   our king to the Holy One of Israel.

 19 Once you spoke in a vision, 
   to your faithful people you said: 
“I have bestowed strength on a warrior; 
   I have raised up a young man from among the people. 
20 I have found David my servant; 
   with my sacred oil I have anointed him. 
21 My hand will sustain him; 
   surely my arm will strengthen him. 
22 The enemy will not get the better of him; 
   the wicked will not oppress him. 
23 I will crush his foes before him 
   and strike down his adversaries. 
24 My faithful love will be with him, 
   and through my name his horn[f] will be exalted. 
25 I will set his hand over the sea, 
   his right hand over the rivers. 
26 He will call out to me, ‘You are my Father, 
   my God, the Rock my Savior.’ 
27 And I will appoint him to be my firstborn, 
   the most exalted of the kings of the earth. 
28 I will maintain my love to him forever, 
   and my covenant with him will never fail. 
29 I will establish his line forever, 
   his throne as long as the heavens endure.

 30 “If his sons forsake my law 
   and do not follow my statutes, 
31 if they violate my decrees 
   and fail to keep my commands, 
32 I will punish their sin with the rod, 
   their iniquity with flogging; 
33 but I will not take my love from him, 
   nor will I ever betray my faithfulness. 
34 I will not violate my covenant 
   or alter what my lips have uttered. 
35 Once for all, I have sworn by my holiness— 
   and I will not lie to David— 
36 that his line will continue forever 
   and his throne endure before me like the sun;

<blockquote><p>1 Therefore, my brothers, you whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, that is how you should stand firm in the Lord, dear friends!</p>
<p><strong>Exhortations</strong></p>
<p> 2 I plead with Euodia and I plead with Syntyche to agree with each other in the Lord. 3 Yes, and I ask you, loyal yokefellow,[a] help these women who have contended at my side in the cause of the gospel, along with Clement and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life.<br />
 4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.</p>
<p> 8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. 9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.</p>
<p><strong>Thanks for Their Gifts</strong></p>
<p> 10 I rejoice greatly in the Lord that at last you have renewed your concern for me. Indeed, you have been concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it. 11 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. 12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. 13 I can do everything through him who gives me strength.<br />
 14 Yet it was good of you to share in my troubles. 15 Moreover, as you Philippians know, in the early days of your acquaintance with the gospel, when I set out from Macedonia, not one church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving, except you only; 16 for even when I was in Thessalonica, you sent me aid again and again when I was in need. 17 Not that I am looking for a gift, but I am looking for what may be credited to your account. 18 I have received full payment and even more; I am amply supplied, now that I have received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent. They are a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God. 19 And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.</p>
<p> 20 To our God and Father be glory for ever and ever. Amen.</p>

1 Therefore, my brothers, you whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, that is how you should stand firm in the Lord, dear friends!

Exhortations

<p> 8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ[a] the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”<br />
 13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,</p>
<p> 14 “Glory to God in the highest,<br />
   and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.”</p>
<p> 15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”</p>
<p> 16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.</p></blockquote>

<blockquote><p><strong>Advent Calls for repentance</strong></p>
<p> 3 A voice of one calling:<br />

Advent Calls for repentance

 3 A voice of one calling: 
“In the desert prepare 
   the way for the LORD[a]; 
make straight in the wilderness 
   a highway for our God.[b] 
4 Every valley shall be raised up, 
   every mountain and hill made low; 
the rough ground shall become level, 
   the rugged places a plain.

<p>  1 “Woe to the shepherds who are destroying and scattering the sheep of my pasture!” declares the LORD. 2 Therefore this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says to the shepherds who tend my people: “Because you have scattered my flock and driven them away and have not bestowed care on them, I will bestow punishment on you for the evil you have done,” declares the LORD. 3 “I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them and will bring them back to their pasture, where they will be fruitful and increase in number. 4 I will place shepherds over them who will tend them, and they will no longer be afraid or terrified, nor will any be missing,” declares the LORD.<br />
 5 “The days are coming,” declares the LORD,<br />
   “when I will raise up to David[a] a righteous Branch,<br />
a King who will reign wisely<br />
   and do what is just and right in the land.<br />
6 In his days Judah will be saved<br />
   and Israel will live in safety.<br />
This is the name by which he will be called:<br />
   The LORD Our Righteousness.</p>

The Righteous Branch

<p> 13 But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because God chose you as firstfruits[a] to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth. 14 He called you to this through our gospel, that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.<br />
 15 So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the teachings[b] we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter.</p>
<p> 16 May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, 17 encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word.</p>

<p> 1 As for other matters, brothers and sisters, pray for us that the message of the Lord may spread rapidly and be honored, just as it was with you. 2 And pray that we may be delivered from wicked and evil people, for not everyone has faith. 3 But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one. 4 We have confidence in the Lord that you are doing and will continue to do the things we command. 5 May the Lord direct your hearts into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance.<br />

  2 Thessalonians 2

Stand Firm

 13 But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because God chose you as firstfruits[a] to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth. 14 He called you to this through our gospel, that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
 15 So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the teachings[b] we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter.
